PENNANT SEASON WRAP UP
Well readers, the MDBA Pennant Season for 2010 drew to a close last Saturday, with the last four Grades decided through three Sectional play offs at Black Head BC and one deferred match.
And what an intriguing Season it has been, with see sawing results, last round deciders and a bit of controversy thrown into the mix! And in the case of the No.4 Grade, to a certain extent history repeated itself.
But to  the outcomes from last Saturday and the Grade Four deferred game between Bulahdelah & Tuncurry, played at Bulahdelah, resulted in a comfortable 6/0 win to Bulahdelah. For the second year, the winner of this Grade was decided by a count back which involved 6 point leader, Taree West; unfortunately for them, Bulahdelah had the better stats and won the flag.
The No.5 Grade was a shootout, between Lansdowne and Old Bar, with Lansdowne coming out on top to claim the title.
The No.6s’ saw Pacific Palms looking to win their second flag this year, when they met Tuncurry. The Palms boys proved too strong and, like their higher grade compatriots, won back to back flags.
The No.7s’ saw Manning Point play Tuncurry for the right to play for the Zone title. At the end of play, it was the Manning Point guys who won the District flag.
So, the final results were, in the No.1s’ Tuncurry from Forster; No.2 s’ Pacific Palms from Tuncurry; No.3s’ Gloucester from Tuncurry; No.4s’ Bulahdelah from Taree West; No.5s’ Lansdowne from Old Bar; No.6s’ Pacific Palms from Tuncurry; No.7s’ Manning Point from Tuncurry.
A feature of the final results this year is that six Clubs won the seven flags; it will be remembered that 2009 saw three Clubs win the lot. This is not in any way meant to derogate their efforts, as they played well and achieved the titles. My comment relates to how good it is to see a number of Clubs share in the spoils.
Pacific Palms BC was the multiple flag winner and it is a magnificent effort on their part – being a small Club – to win four District flags in two years. From the results, Tuncurry BC proved to have more competitive depth compared to other Clubs, they winning the “blue ribbon” event and was runner up in four other Grades.
The District congratulates the flag winners on their victories and wishes them every success in the Zone Pennant play offs in the Upper Hunter District on the 19th & 20th June.
Now to the Season as a whole!
A number of Clubs had expectations that they wished to fulfil, following either reconfiguring their solid players or their recruiting campaigns or putting new combinations onto the “playing fields”. And, indeed, results of early rounds reflected the thoughts of various Club Selectors in that regard.
However, as they say in the classics “the best laid plans of mice and men, etc”. Some may say that the latter half of the Season saw the unravelling of plans and expectations. And some have intimated that the signs of that happening appeared earlier in the competition.
Irrespective of what viewpoint you entertain, the Season threw up a number of imponderables making it difficult for anyone to accurately predict what may happen. I said as much about a couple of Grades throughout the eleven weeks of play. This is as it should be; Pennants and other competitive bowls should never be predictable. Long live Murphy’s Law!
As I mentioned last year, I withdrew from Pennant play, which enabled me to get around to a number of Clubs and view their games first hand. To my knowledge, the only Grade I missed out on was the Threes, the majority of games seen being from the Twos to the Sevens.
I enjoyed watching the lower grade games as they were played just as intensely as the higher grades; it was encouraging to see the effort they put into their games for the honour of their Club. Indeed, I saw many good performances from young or new bowlers, which bodes well for the future of their Club.
An observation from the eleven weeks of play is that a couple of adages may care to be considered for next and subsequent years. Thoughts like bowls in the head win games; 90% of shots played in any game is, or is based upon, a draw shot; and the three Cs’ should always be considered ab initio. Nevertheless, I’m always willing to learn or entertain differing views.
The “transfer or silly season” for all grades may not start as early as one suspected and there may be a few staying at home. Time will tell!
I did not mention relegations specifically, because there is one or two yet to be decided and those Clubs mentioned earlier in my reports are unchanged. I would like to think that these Clubs and their players will be strong in their resolve to regain the lost Grade and direct their energies to do so earlier than usual.
Now to my fearless pre Pennant foot in mouth predictions! Well, I was not as successful this year as in 2009. I managed three out of seven with one second. Two Pacific Palms, Lansdowne and Taree West. Oh well, back to the drawing board!
Finally, on behalf of the District, the District’s bowlers and myself, many thanks to the Times for their support of our Pennants Reports, to Mick McDonald and the Editorial Staff for their tremendous assistance, to the Photographers who covered a number of our games and to the girls who took my calls – you deserve medals of valour in answering them!

In the meantime I wish you all good bowling and may the luck be shared equally.

  1.  Ask RNSWBA for permission for Grade 6 to play 3 rounds of home and away (Home-Away-Home) which will give them 9 games.  The tenth round could be the Grade 6 Final.
