RILEY & REDMAN IN ZONE SIDE
Last Sunday, trial games for selection in the Junior U18 Zone Six Seven A Side were conducted at Kurri Kurri BC, with junior bowlers from the Manning, Hunter & Upper Hunter Districts attending.
The junior squad played senior bowlers from Kurri Kurri BC, comprising former State, Premier League and current No.1 Pennant players, who put the juniors through their paces. The competition was strong and the guys handled themselves exceptionally well against their more experienced opponents.
At the conclusion of the games and after their deliberations, the Zone Side was announced by the Selectors. The Manning District, even though losing out to the Hunter in this year’s Zone Championships, achieved two selections.
They are Dylan Riley of Taree Leagues BC who will play in the Singles and Jaison Redman of Tuncurry BC, who will be playing second in the Fours. The balance of the Side comes from the Hunter District and they are Bojkowski & Bailey (Pairs), Deasey, Curtis & Bell (Fours) and Herbert is the reserve.
Both Dylan & Jaison are current District Champions, Dylan winning the three disciplines and Jaison the Fours. It is a shame that injury and personal commitments did not permit the District’s other two champions to attend the trials, as I’m confident that they would have acquitted themselves well.
Dylan, at 16, is an “old hand”, having represented the Zone in the State Inter Zone Championships last year and his capabilities have been previously reported on. His trial game against former State player Nathan Dawson was a pleasure to watch, with Dawson only just winning by the odd shot.
It will be a new experience for Jaison who, at 13, will quite possibly be the youngest Zone Rep ever to play in these Championships. Jaison has been playing for a few years and his abilities have increased during this time, he only just missing out on this year’s District Junior Singles title.
His performance in the Fours trial was very good, drawing favourable comments from the more experienced opposition. The experience he will gain from the Championships will benefit him for his future in the sport, as he will be eligible for Junior U18 Competitions for the next five years..
The State Inter Zone Championships will be conducted at Port City BC on 14th & 15th August. Prior to then, practise games will be held at Taree Leagues BC on Sunday 25th July to ensure the guys will be finely tuned for the Competition. The Zone is hoping to have past Chairman of the State Selectors, Sam Clough, attend and address the guys from 9.00am before they hit the green for their games.
The District congratulates Dylan and Jaison on their selection and wishes them every success in the coming Championships.

JUNIOR ZONE TITLES TO HUNTER
The Zone 6 Junior U18 Titles were played at Bulahdelah BC over the past two weekends, with the Hunter District players reversing last year’s results to win the three Championships.
These Championships have the habit of unveiling a star or stars of the future and this year was no exception, with Hayden Bojkowski of the Hunter District winning the three Events.
The Fours was the first Event up for decision last Saturday week, with the Manning District represented by Nathan Butler, Jaison Redman, Aaron Pereira & Dylan Riley. They met the Hunter District team skippered by Hayden Bojkowski in the Final, as the Upper Hunter did not field a team this year.
Unfortunately for our guys, the Hunter boys got off to a flying start and were never headed. Due to the earlier wet weather, playing conditions were not conducent to good bowls; however, both teams played on the same rink and had to manage the conditions to the best of their ability. The Hunter guys produced the goods on the day!
Last Saturday, the Pairs Championship was decided, with Aaron Pereira & Dylan Riley being the Manning Reps. They met Damian Bailey & Hayden Bojkowski in the afternoon’s Final, following the Hunter boy’s win against the Upper Hunter team in the morning.
The miserable weather continued into Saturday afternoon, presenting poor conditions for bowls; however, the four guys took to the green and the battle commenced.
The Hunter lads led the way for the first half of the game, until our guys caught them and hit the front. Then the rain came and play was suspended for about ten minutes.
When the match resumed, the Hunter team hit their straps once more, levelled the scores and gradually drew away to win the game. A case of so near yet so far for our boys!
On the Sunday, the Singles were played, with Bojkowski comfortably winning his morning game against the Upper Hunter Champ and met Dylan Riley for the title in the afternoon.
Conditions were a lot more pleasant for the guys and they proceeded to show their prowess to the spectators. The score did not reflect the game as, on many occasions, Riley held the shot, only for Bojkowski to reduce the advantage or take the shot away from him. Such is bowls!
There could only be one winner and Hayden Bojkowski defeated a gallant Dylan Riley to make it a treble. Bojkowski is in tremendous form, having recently won the prestigious Hub of the Hunter Pairs Tournament and his Club’s Minor Singles Championship, just prior to these Zone Championships.
While the Hunter guys won the spoils this year and we congratulate them, the real winner was bowls. All of the juniors illustrated that the game is in good hands, in view of their competitive spirit, good play and the demeanour exhibited throughout the Championships.
Finally, the hospitality extended by Bulahdelah BC was very much appreciated by the players and spectators alike. The Club is to be congratulated on the way they made everyone feel welcome and for the facilities provided. Well done and thanks, Sue, Rod and company!
